Title, Barangaroo
Housed in the ground floor space of the sculptural R7 building, Title Barangaroo is a unique retail experience, with a curated selection of art and design books, music and film. Designed to capture the imagination of passersby, this overflowing bookstore emphasises the "beauty of the journey" with an unforgettable retail experience.
Designed to encourage browsing and discovery, Title stores have a reputation as cultural destinations, with their eclectic mix of stock designed to lead you to "exotic side streets of the imagination".
The unusual 6 metre high volume has a sense of theatre and visual complexity, with an existing elevated concrete platform to the rear of the space. Rather than separate the different levels, Title was designed as one dramatic space engaging with the sculptural possibilities of the volume while leaving room for the architecture to breathe.
A generous set of stairs stretches the full width of the store, creating a sense of theatre, and an informal seating area for the Title events program. The rear of the store is lined with full height shelving, forming a dramatic backdrop to the space. The shelving is designed to accommodate both face out and spine out book display, with an unusual system of removable timber dowels supporting the book covers.
The display joinery is simple and industrial in language, letting the accumulation of book covers become the focus. Playful display trolleys are piled with books, and lit by pendant lighting draped down from the ceiling, wrapping around the trolley structure. Timber, plywood, Formply and black steelwork form a subdued backdrop to brightly coloured book covers. The simplicity of the scheme and the elements within it is a deliberate response to the complexity of the facades enclosing the space.
